Motherhood seen as a Spiritual Path.

Motherhood as the new spiritual path (if you allow it)
By Laura María Jiménez

Some people point to traditional religious life—Christian renunciation of material things, or the absolute devotion found in other faiths—as the clearest examples of spirituality. But if we leave history and doctrine aside, “spirituality” today feels more about perception: what we think it is, and the stories we tell about it.

I catch myself sometimes in the absurdity of believing I’m more spiritual because I wear certain clothes, say certain things, or do “spiritual” activities—yoga, meditation, or trying not to lose my temper when I stub my toe. After two decades on what I once called a spiritual path, laughing with yoga teachers and even so‑called gurus about what really makes someone spiritual (or vain), a simpler question comes to me: Can I take one breath with full awareness of this moment, whatever I’m doing—even while I’m in the bathroom? I answer yes. Is that spiritual? I’m not sure.

What I do know is this: for me, spirituality stopped being a set of rituals and started being a way of living when I became a mother. I renounced my professional practice and devoted myself to caring for three children who chose me as their mother. The “me” that used to be focused on personal pursuits has largely dissolved; now that self exists to tend to the basics—sleep when you can, eat, drink, move, and talk to adults once in a while. That practical, service‑oriented self is my new spiritual path. The wholeness I once found on my yoga mat or in therapy sessions now emerges in the daily work of loving, listening, and caring for my family.

My children became my present‑moment teachers—true gurus in the original sense: guides through darkness toward the light. They’ve taught me how to hold sacred space for transformation—what they call tantrums are, in many ways, small soul journeys that invite us grownups to witness, steady, and guide.

Motherhood reveals and heals old wounds. I find myself crying in corners when a trigger hits. When Elliot, three years old, screams in desperation because “my dad left to work and I will miss him sooo much,” I remember being a child held and soothed by my own mother with the gentle assurance that he would come back. And indeed he did. These living reminders awaken buried childhood memories, as if we lived in an ashram: waking up to a happiness meditation (three kids jumping on the bed), keeping a gratitude journal (three kids jumping on the bed), and offering a nourishing breakfast buffet because everyone’s tastes differ. In the practice of choosing our battles, we often choose to listen—to serve—rather than insist on having our way.

Keeping inner peace while one child constantly needs help and another melts down because he’s overtired—if that isn’t a spiritual practice, I don’t know what is.

As our personalities shift—sometimes vanish—into the person required by this new life, it’s like a metamorphosis. Parenthood rewires our brains, reshapes priorities, and creates people our friends sometimes barely recognize. We become conscious parents. We allow this life to transform and heal us, and through our children, we help change the world.

To those who have gone through these metamorphoses with us: thank you for helping me see the beauty in this new spiritual path.

So to new parents: don’t fight the change—the tsunami of exhaustion paired with the most breathtaking love you’ll ever know. Allow yourself to be transformed.

I continue with the challenge of taking care of me I continue with the challenge of taking care of me while taking care of others…

In my life the rule is the PLAIN mode “put the oxígeno first then to others” if I don’t have oxigen then how the H…ll am I going to do anything.

So here I am in my YEARLY hair do, yes bc is really good I don’t need to do it more than that.

For me my oxigen is also going for a walk, dancing in my room with my head phones full, taking power naps and inviting myself alone to the movies.

So mama what’s yours, name me ones that are. Unique and only yours… like for three moths I did the nail thing but realize that my natural nails where getting cooked in the process so then I had to let them grow for another three months to let them strong again. Learn my lesson and that for sure was not at all something I wanted to continue as a “me” time thing.

It’s ok if you dig that (no judging) only observations. Ha ha! I learn that from my hubby. 😊

Anyways what do you do that allows your brain to have some air.

Comment and help me keep this account alive bc for some reason Instagram and facebook are not letting me grow. For every follower the next day I am taking three off.

So mama comment please!
